Martin Short reprises characters at gala

A side-splitting performance by former Saturday Night Live star Martin Short highlighted the 21st annual Lady In Red gala. “A Night in Shanghai” took place Dec. 6 at The Mar-a-Lago Club, which was transformed into a dramatic Asian scene from the enormous dragon suspended over the pool to the dramatic red and gold décor.

The night began with cocktails and food stations around the pool, covered with a clear tent so the light from the full moon could stream in. After cocktails, guests moved to the grand ballroom for Short’s performance.
Short lived up to his comic rep, reprising his roles in The Three Amigos – with the help from a few good-natured audience members — as Franc from Father of the Bride and Jiminy Glick doing an interview with a remarkably composed Toni Holt Kramer.
Lois Pope and Lola Astanova were chairwomen for the evening, which continued with dinner, a live auction and dancing to the Sultans of Swing.
Patrick Park and Dr. Robert Mackler were chairmen. Donald and Melania Trump were honorary chairman and honorary chairwoman.
More than 500 guests attended, including the military dog Matty, on her first media outing after returning from Afghanistan and her reunion with Spec. Brent Grommet.
Proceeds from the event assist the American Humane Association in its mission to protect “the voiceless and the vulnerable” — children and animals. Among its projects in Palm Beach County is the 50-foot-long Lois Pope Red Star Rescue Vehicle, which provides emergency rescue services for animals caught in natural disasters or in cruelty cases. The giant mobile response vehicle also provides adoption services and brings humane education into the schools.

Animal rescue group to deliver dogs, cats on Christmas morning

A group of volunteers plans to hit the streets Christmas morning to make a series of special deliveries to Palm Beach County homes: newly adopted rescue dogs and cats.

Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League is offering the holiday drop-offs — available for any pet adopted by Sunday — for the first time. While animal rescue groups have done similar deliveries elsewhere, officials at Peggy Adams say they haven’t seen it happen locally.

“This time of year is always a popular time for families to adopt a new pet, and we just thought this would be a really fun way to add to that excitement on Christmas Day,” said Rich Anderson, executive director and CEO of the West Palm Beach shelter.

Five vans filled with volunteers will fan out across the county between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. to bring the animals to peoples’ doors. Jim Lilli, director of operations at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, will be among those playing Santa.

He said he’s excited about the drop-offs and happy to give up a few hours of his Christmas morning to pitch in.

“I think when we think back on our memories of childhood, we always remember Christmas Day, and you remember when you got your first pet,” Lilli said. “And how wonderful it is to have those two memories together?”

Anderson said the goal is to find families for as many animals as possible. To that end, the shelter is allowing people to “name their own price” for adoption fees, which typically start at $50.

The Christmas deliveries are free. But only a limited number are available, so those interested in surprising a loved one with a new four-legged friend are encouraged to move fast.

“There’s only so much room in Santa’s sleigh, as we say,” Lilli said.

While some animal advocacy groups once advised against giving pets as gifts, a peer-reviewed study by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals concluded there is no reason to believe they’ll be rejected or returned.

The group now cheers Christmas deliveries.

“Christmas is coming up, birthdays are every day, and dogs and cats in some shelters around the country are missing chances at homes,” ASPCA Vice President of Shelter Research and Development Emily Weiss wrote in a blog post on the topic. “So it’s time to put this myth to bed.”

Plus, Anderson said Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League requires anyone interested in giving a pet for Christmas to first visit the shelter and meet all adoption requirements. Staff spend time ensuring the match between owner and pet is one that will last, he said.

The shelter currently has more than 500 dogs and cats, with about 230 immediately ready for adoption.

“They’d be so much happier, they all would be, in a real home,” Anderson said.

Friends and supporters of LIFE will gather at the Mar-a-Lago Club Dec. 6 for the 21st annual “Lady in Red” Gala, themed A Night in Shanghai, for an adventurous evening.

The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails under the full, late-autumn moon, which will include a silent auction, a vodka luge, caviar and an ice sculpture courtesy of The Park Foundation, Patrick M. Park. Cocktails will be followed by dinner, a live auction offering items including jewelry donated by Tiffany & Co. and dancing with the Sultans of Swing.

Co-chairs of the evening are Lois Pope, Dr. Robert Mackler and Patrick M. Park. Honorary Chairs are Melania and Donald Trump. Guests will be entertained by comedic legend Martin Short. An informal meet and greet reception with Short will take place at 6 p.m.

Short, a celebrated comedian and actor, has won fans and accolades in television, film and theater since his breakout season on Saturday Night Live almost 30 years ago. He won his first Emmy in 1982 while working on Canada’s SCTV Comedy Network, which brought him to the attention of Saturday Night Live producers. He became a fan-favorite for his portrayal of characters such as Ed Grimley, lawyer Nathan Thurm and songwriter Irving Cohen.

His popularity and exposure on Saturday Night Live led Short to cross over quickly into feature films. He made his debut in Three Amigos and followed with Inner Space, Three Fugitives, Clifford, Pure Luck and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks. One of Short’s most memorable roles was in the remake of Father of the Bride, as Franck the wedding planner, a role he reprised a few years later in Father of the Bride Part II. Short was also featured in the animated film Madagascar 3 and the Tim Burton film Frankenweenie.

Most recently seen on the CBS hit comedy series How I Met Your Mother in the recurring role of Garrison Coote, Short is currently starring in the first season of the new FOX series Mulaney.

All proceeds from the evening will benefit LIFE’s partnership with American Humane Association (AHA), which includes a program to protect the voiceless and the vulnerable in society – children and animals.

Sponsors of LIFE’s “Lady in Red” gala include: Tiffany & Co., The Park Foundation, American Humane Association, Wells Fargo Advisors, Clientele Beauty, Braman Motorcars and Hoffman Chocolates.
